Welcome to:
The three wiring diagrams on this page include schemes for an electrical source at the switch or at the ceiling fixture. Controls for the fixture include a wall switch and pull chains to operate both the fan and light as well as wiring for a rheostat to control the light fixture separately.
Use this wiring scheme when the power source to a ceiling fan/light originates at the switch. Connect the neutral and ground wires directly to the fixture. Connnect the hot wire from the source to the bottom terminal on the switch. Connect the top terminal on the switch to the black and blue wires on the fixture. When the wall switch is on the fan and light can be controlled with a pull chain on the fixture. |
Wiring a Switch Loop for a Fan/Light Kit
Use this wiring when the source for a ceiling fan is at the fixture. Run a switch loop to connect the hot wire from the source to the bottom terminal on the switch and connect the top terminal on the switch to the blue and black wires on the fan/light. |
Using a Rheostat to Control the Fan/Light Kit
To allow for dimming the light in a ceiling fan with a light kit, use a switch loop to connect the hot wire from the source to the bottom terminal on a rheostat switch. Connect the top terminal on the rheostat to the blue wire from the light. |
